Hans Hofmann (1880-1966), an early 20th century artist, an Abstract Expressionist, from Bavaria, started teaching art classes during summer session at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1930. In 1963 he donated forty-five paintings and $250,000 to the University of California on the condition that an art museum be built on campus.
